Deforestation Data and Trends
It has been a couple of months since the release of our latest ecosystem product CYCLOPS, a comprehensive platform for monitoring natural capital. With 2023 nearing its end, it’s a good time to reflect on deforestation trends and the vital need to safeguard our rainforests.
This WRI report highlights deforestation patterns between 2002 and 2022. We’re eagerly anticipating the 2023 data, hoping to see the influence of Brazil’s new president’s environmental policies reflected in the forthcoming data sets.

New Datasets to Monitor Natural Capital
Scientists from Sun Yat-Sen University have created and open-sourced the Globe230k dataset, which contains semantic segmentation of over 232,000 multimodal remote sensing images from a wide range of global regions. This large-scale remote sensing annotation dataset provides new insight into the dynamic monitoring of global land cover.
An international team of researchers has compiled and released the Database of European Forest Insect and Disease Disturbances (DEFID2). This new open database is a valuable tool for comprehending the ecological dynamics of forest damage due to insects and diseases, tracking these changes, and enhancing terrestrial and climate models.

Gitcoin Grants 19 — Climate Solutions Round
During this quarter’s Gitcoin Grant, the climate solutions round contained 100 ReFi projects. Over 3,300 people donated more than $35,000. These donations will be increased via a matching pool of $150,000 using quadratic funding mechanisms.
The crowd-sourced funding supports grassroots climate projects in the ReFi space.
